Summer Send-off Salad

Summer produce is the best produce.  Peaches, plums, berries, melon, tomatoes, corn - these are the things of midsummer nights' food dreams.  Come January, you'll be hard pressed to find a decent tomato in the grocery store and you'd give your weight in navel oranges for just one nice, juicy peach.  With Labor day fast approaching, I'm beginning to lament the end of watermelon and reasonably priced strawberries.  So this week at the grocery store, I stocked up on all my summer produce faves.  After a particularly steamy commute home from work, I whipped up a cool and refreshing fruit salad that highlights some of my favorite summer flavors.  Four ingredients are all you need and the fresh basil gives this salad a sweet and herby twist!

Summer Send-off Fruit Salad
(Serves 4-6 as a side)
1/2 a mini watermelon, cubed or scooped out with a melon-baller
1/2 lb strawberries, hulled and quartered
Juice of 1/2 a lime (about 1 TBSP)
1 TBSP fresh basil, chiffonade

Add the melon balls, strawberries, lime juice, and basil to a large bowl.  Gently toss to combine.  Chill for an hour or so and serve.
