Modern Family makes my Wednesday night week after week. If you've been living under a rock for the past couple of years and have never seen this comic masterpiece, I suggest renting/streaming it ASAP! Some weeks, the only thing that gets me to Friday is the mid-week comedic oasis that is Modern Family. Recently, I also received some culinary inspiration from my favorite funny family. During season 2, Mitchell makes reference to a "PB&J" sandwich that consists of "pear, brie, and jambon". It sounded delicious when the episode first aired, and it sounded pretty amazing on a recent rainy Saturday afternoon. So I decided to make my own "PB&J" a la Mitchell and Cam. I had pears, brie, and prosciutto (close enough). I improvised a smear of dijon mustard because let's face it, not many things can't be improved by a little dijon. Also, I took some creative license and grilled the PB&J masterpiece, I'm sure Cam would have wanted it that way :) Turns out, Mitch and Cam were on to something!
PB&J (Pear, Brie, and Jambon) Sandwiches
Sliced Italian or French bread (sourdough would be good too)
1 thinly sliced pear (I recommend a sweet variety, like Bartlett)
Brie
A couple thin slices of prosciutto
A smear of dijon mustard
Freshly cracked black pepper
A little olive oil
Start by heating up your preferred method of sandwich-toasting: saute pan, grill pan, panini press, etc. Next, smear dijon mustard on one piece of bread. Arrange a few slices of brie on the other piece. Next, top the brie with pear slices, and arrange the prosciutto on top. Add a little black pepper, if you like. Next, close up that sandwich and drizzle the bread with a little olive oil.
Place the sandwich oiled-side-down on your hot pan. Once the bottom is golden brown and the cheese is just starting to ooze, drizzle the other side with olive oil and give your sandwich a flip. Once it is equally toasty on both sides, you're ready to eat!
I enjoyed my PB&J with a cup of butternut squash soup, it brightened my rainy Saturday right up!
